What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a type of restoration that is used to protect a decayed or damaged tooth that cannot be treated with a dental filling. Placed over the affected tooth, it provides a barrier against reinfection while allowing the underlying area to strengthen over time. Dental crowns can be made using various materials, but our dentists are pleased to provide a metal-free option so that children can feel more confident and comfortable with their new smile.

The Dental Crown Process

Placing a metal-free dental crown is a multi-step process that usually requires two dental visits. Initially, one of our skilled dentists will prepare the tooth after taking digital X-rays. This will be completed using specialized instruments to file down the tooth so that the crown can fit snugly over it when put into place.

We will then take an impression of the tooth and send it to a dental lab. There, technicians will use the specifications provided to craft a custom, zirconia dental crown. In the meantime, your child will receive a temporary crown that they will wear until their next appointment.

Once the lab sends the finalized crown to our dental office, we will alert you so that you can bring your child back in to have the temporary one removed and the finalized version attached.

The Benefits of Getting a Metal-Free Dental Crown

Dental crowns of any kind offer many great benefits, but those that are metal-free provide additional advantages, including:

  • A more aesthetically pleasing, natural-looking smile that your child can feel confident showing off to friends at school.
  • A restoration that does not consist of any metal, so there is no chance of dark rings forming around the base of their tooth.
  • A tooth that functions normally, so your child can eat and speak without trouble.
  • A crown that can last several years and withstand daily wear and tear.
  • A solution that protects your child’s vulnerable tooth from further harm and potential reinfection.
